Progress through processors....

I was just going through some fan sites today when i noticed this application.Called progress through processors,Intel's initiative uses Idle time of CPU'S around the world who are connected to the gridrepublic which also runs various other not for profit initatives like climate control, rosetta home and reasearch for malaria in sub saharan africa

This initiative excited  me and i decided to see how the whole system works. After logging into facebook and downloading the app,The software utilizes idle time of the CPU.

A neat interface gives information on diskusage, resource statistics and available projects which we can join.intel1

Volunteer computing seems to be an ideal platform for organmizations who cannot afford the huge costs involved in purchasing and maintaining complex systems. The cloud has indeed made the world into a smaller place, a global village of sorts.Kudos to intel

  1. Interesting...

I'd like to know more about how the computing power is being used - what exactly is being modeled?

Connectivity has a cost associated too... I grasp the concept, but as multi-core CPUs are becoming more common and available at a lot lower cost, I wonder if a couple quad core desktops couldn't provide about as much computing power as a lot of volunteers donating a few cycles here and there.

Maybe the site has some math that shows my thoughts to be way off? How off?

    Great write up..keep us posted!
